Last year we have seen many new and already known signature moves. Some vaulters have developed new moves or just made a specific exercises their signature move, which characterizes the teams or vaulter from now on. In this article we’ll present you 4 special vaulting exercises!

We have asked different teams and vaulters how they came up with their signature move and how they practiced the exercise.

1. Sam Dos Santos: One-armed dismount

Sam calls this exercise “The Herning move” because it brings back so many good memories from that competition.

How did you come up with the move?

I was training with my trainer Diede and with Hendrik. After a day of training we just started joking and trying some new crazy moves. That is kind of how we came up with it.

How did you practice it?

I was already familiar with the normal back handspring, so it wasn’t that difficult. I tried it a few times on the ground and off the barrel. I did it on the horse the next training.

2. Averill Saunders: Outside Biellmann

How did you come up with the move?

In my junior freestyle from 2021, I had a forwards biellmann. As I moved into the 2022 training season I wanted to upgrade the exercise into a version I hadn’t seen before, that’s where I had the idea to turn it outside.

How did you practice it?

I started training the exercise first in an arabesque to the outside prior to doing the biellmann. This gave me a foundation that I was confident in. From there I knew I could upgrade it to the biellmann. I also spent lots of time on the MOVIE/ Rundlauf building my understanding of the exercise once turned outside, I think this played a large role in my success when moving it to the horse.

I had a lot of inconsistent, but early success with the exercise in September of 2021. This gave me hope that it was definitely possible, but needed more time to be consistent.

3. Nadja Büttiker: The Wupper

How did you come up with the move?

I saw it in artistic gymnastics and thought “cool I want to try that too.”

How did you practice it?

I tried it on the ground and then directly on the horse and just reduced the height a bit at the beginning. That’s pretty much the only exercise that worked right away.

4. Team Lütisburg: Break (=Yoga Press) on the needle

How did you come up with the move?

The idea came spontaneously and was first rather a joke, we just wanted to find out something on Nadja’s needle. It was certainly also inspired by videos on Instagram. From time to time you see circus artists doing handstands on the neck of the needle. A Yoga Press was a bit more realistic 😄

How did you practice it?

We first practiced the exercise on the barrel and movie, but very soon also on the horse. We had to work a bit on the setup. But since Nadja and Ilona both have their positions well under control, the exercise quickly worked amazingly well. Only once Ilona pulled too hard on the upper leg, which ended in a spectacular forward somersault.

| DEUTSCH |
