I was able to do kneeling, flag, held on stand and a swing forwards in canter.

But during training we got on way more slowly. Fürst was only 5 years old, this is why he needed riding training and lunging. He responded well pretty quickly to the aids when lunging, so we started with kneeling and the first compulsory exercises.

Fürst’s problem was not to carry people who were moving and he never disliked exercises, we just had to work on his own balance and condition. In general, we listened to him a lot: when he had a bad day Adda just lunged him without Jella and me doing vaulting on him. In the end we all benefit from that. The rider can hold the horse way better together and can support him better than it’s possible on the lunge. Since Fürst got ridden by professionals, it’s easier for him to find balance and he’s stronger than before, which makes it easier for us to vault, too. It’s better to invest a little money, it’s worth it!

3. Listen to your horse and be brave enough to change things.

Fürst showed us in every training straight away in which mood he was. Of course, every horse has to learn during his training and you have to keep a certain workload on a bad day too, but especially when horses are young, you should allow them to have a bad day.

Moreover, small changes can improve a lot. Always question yourself:

Maybe your warming up is too long for your horse, which is why it doesn’t have enough power for the following training? Maybe the side reins could be placed a little higher? Is the pad really fitting my horse? I think that during the training of a horse it is very important to try out a lot in order to figure out what is best for yourself, the horse and the vaulters.

Many of us struggle to find a proper vaulting horse.
