I am 28 years old and come from Lampertheim in Hessen, Germany.

Growing up on a farm with sheep farming, I had daily contact with animals as a toddler. When my family bought a horse pension in 2005, it was clear to me that I wanted to work with horses professionally. After my state examination, I trained as a human physiotherapist in the field of equine osteopathy. This was followed by further training as an acupuncturist and leech therapist for horses and small animals.

I run a mobile practice for horses and small animals and I am also responsible for the physiotherapeutic care of the small four-legged friends in a veterinary practice.

I love working with both humans and animals and finding weaknesses in the individual’s musculoskeletal system. With the horse owner I try to find solution strategies for these problems in the movement sequence and for the blockages found, since very often the riding or working method, the saddle or the posture have effects on the back health of the horse.

Why are osteopathic treatments so important for vaulting horses?

The back of the horse is exposed to gravity due to its horizontal build as a four-legged friend. Horses in the great outdoors are constantly moving, thereby exercising their trunk-bearing muscles so that they can carry their torso themselves against gravity, without putting excessive strain on the tendons, ligaments and joints of the extremities.

Due to the domestication of the horse and the consequent reduction in natural movement, it is the job of the horse owner to exercise his horse in such a way that the trunk can be actively carried by the horse. Vaulting horses in particular are exposed to one-sided loads in a circular motion, which results in high centrifugal forces and thus an excessive load on the passive structures of the limbs (ligaments, joints, tendons).

Therefore, a vaulting horse should always be offered compensatory activities, such as working on a longer straight line, as is the case, for example, in the field. Basic training in dressage is also highly recommended, as the horse learns to actively straighten his pelvis, with his hind legs under the center of gravity, based on the scale of the training (rhythm, suppleness, contact, impulsion, straightness, collection), to approach the bit with the neck and head forward and thereby actively support the back through the activity of the trunk-supporting muscles.

In this way, damaging overloading of the bony structures of the spine and the extremities can be avoided.

Daily physiotherapeutic exercises, which I discuss and go through with the horse owner depending on the case, complement this holistic training wonderfully.

In vaulting horses that are also well ridden, I find no differences in the osteopathic examination and treatment compared to the pure riding horse.

Therefore, this should also be the requirement for vaulters to think as holistically as possible and to offer the horse alternatives at work.

A regular check of the equipment for pressure and fit and a necessary adjustment is recommended.

The vaulter himself should be agile and have good coordination so as not to disturb the horse’s movement due to his own “inclination” or restlessness and possibly even promote one-sided loads negatively.

When dealing with the horse, we should all have the courage and willingness to change and perfect things, including ourselves, for the good of the horse.

How does a typical osteopathic treatment work?

At the beginning of a treatment, I first look at the animal in motion to see whether there is lameness, lack of rhythm or, for example, asymmetries in the muscles.

Then I grope and test the horse from front to back and from top to bottom to feel warm or hardened spots, edema or changes in muscle tension and to get a general impression of the tissue.

Then the examination becomes more specific: I test joints in their respective directions of movement for their mobility and can thus determine whether there is a blockage, a movement is very tough or even crepitus, ie a “cracking” of the joint, which is often an indication of arthrotic changes in the joints.

What should not be missing in my assessment is a survey of the rider regarding posture, feeding, behavior of the horse, about known diseases or previous illnesses, because this information can be important for the cause and therapy of the back problems and may need to be changed in order to achieve an improvement in health.

The blockages and disorders found in the musculoskeletal system are primarily treated or resolved by me through:

– manual therapeutic joint mobilizations (I improve the mobility in the joint by an impulse or by stretching the joint capsule),

– massage and fascia techniques (I work the muscles and the surrounding tissue with my hands so that I change the tension in the muscles for the positive),

– Acupuncture (using acupuncture needles, which I place in pain points, so-called “trigger points”, pain relief and solution of the affected area can be achieved immediately)

– and depending on the case, leeches, which have anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antibiotic effects.

How do I know that a horse needs osteopathic treatment?

In fact, it is often possible for the rider to feel blockages or movement restrictions. This is shown, among other things, in nodding, an interrupted contact, running away from the outer shoulder, “not going over the back”, lack of rhythm, lack of forward urge, reluctant bending and / or position on one side or even in suddenly occurring contradictions such as rearing, bucking or kicking.

In daily contact with the horse he could also show sensitivity / unwillingness to touch, a clear, defensive twitching in response to pressure (this is often the case in the saddle position) and restlessness or defensive reaction when saddling / harnessing, climbing up.

If you are interested in the topic or a treatment, you can follow Laura Beck with her daily work on Instagram!

| DEUTSCH |
