How much do the clubs or vaulting departments have to spend each month on their horses? How much do the coaches receive for their work? To present an overview, we asked you exactly these questions on Facebook – with the support of Vaulting World.

Unfortunately, we only got eight answers, which is too little to find meaningful averages. However, if you participated in the survey, your efforts were not in vain, because on the one hand you have written some interesting information that may apply to many other clubs, on the other hand it showed even in the small sample, how large the bandwidth is.

Costs per month

What you pay for vaulting per month varies a lot. On the one hand, it is very different how long a training session is (45/60/90 minutes), on the other hand, the frequency is very different (1 to 5 times a week). With one unit per week, the range was between 15 and 40 euros per month. In some cases the costs are staggered according to the level. In one club mini vaulters pay 15 euros per month and junior groups 20 euros per month. Some clubs charge additional fees for gym training, other clubs do not, others replace the horse training during the winter by gym training (especially in the basic/recreational area).

Competing vaulters often pay relatively less, which means although they sometimes have 5 times more training than beginners (including gym training), they do not pay 5 times more per month.

One participant reported a hefty increase last year (from 22 to 32 euros per month for 45 minutes of training per week, 2 hours of gym training are free), since the club has to build up again, but the increase is due to the fact that other clubs in the region are also so expensive. The respondent contradicts this statement, because the cost would be there only at 20 to 25 euros – including all other costs.

Individual vaulters must pay 15 euros per month for their training in an association in addition to the group fee (for 1 to 3 additional units per week). In another club a vaulter pays 50 euros per week for one-to-one training sessions per week. The horse runs only for them – “economically considered total insanity”, as expressed by the survey respondent, especially in comparison with equestrian sports, as it is impossible to finance the horse.

Some survey respondents point to the additional annual contributions, which vary in line with the monthly contributions and vary widely by age (under and over 18). In the participating clubs the range (where stated) was between 32 and 105 euros per year, in part, sometimes with an admission fee for new vaulters.

Additional costs

Some fairly high monthly contributions are put into perspective by the fact that the team vaulters in exchange for competition and clinic participation have to pay little or no money: In some clubs, the athletes pay all costs, in some cases none at all; in one club up to 100 euros per year of the competition costs are paid, then these are allocated to the active vaulters, also the travel costs are subsidized. In some cases, lump sums are charged for competition starts (two examples: 5 euros plus travel costs or 10 euros per competition). An association wrote to us that it is trying to cover part of the costs by sponsors.

Sometimes a distinction is made between competition and clinic costs: In one club, the athletes do not pay extra for competition starts, but must finance the clinics or additional training themselves.

A special case are individuals, often they have to pay their costs (travel, boxes, hotel …) completely on their own or finance them through sponsors.

Some survey participants mentioned the costumes: For example, one club raises a suit lump sum to finance new costumes and pay off old ones. In another club, the competing teams have to pay their suits themselves, for junior groups the club takes over.

In general, the possibilities for additional costs are manifold: In one club there is an additional hall fee of 50 euros per year per active person, in another 10 euros per person for about 1 hour of movie training is charged, although the mechanic exercise horse is in another club.

Trainer remuneration

It became clear: As a vaulting coach you will not get rich. Some do not receive any pay for their work, for others it depends in part on the qualification – in one club, the range lies between 5 and 20 euros, depending on existing licenses and tasks (helpers receive less than main responsible coaches). In one club, a longer journey is especially rewarded (20 to 25 euros per training).

Partly the coaches use their own horses. Which means from the (not lavish fee anyway) they finance at least partly the costs, which are caused by the horses as well as their journey. In addition, a lump sum is paid by the vaulting department in one club, in another one the coach and horse owner receive a money-box, with which the active participants participate in the feed costs.

A club chooses a special approach: Its helpers receive with 50 euros a year relatively little fee, but in addition recognitions like free riding lessons or the competition money is issued.

Costs for the horses

How much the clubs have to spend on food, vets, etc. per horse is again very different. Some come out with around 200 euros per month, but on a facility leased for the club. Another club calculates with 630 euros per horse per month – more than three times as much. In part, there is still a hall fee added.

One respondent points out that, among other things due to the bad hay harvest in 2018, their costs have risen this year by around 40 euros per month per horse.

Conclusion & Cause for thought

Although the cost of training sessions, especially in comparison to horseback riding, in vaulting is relatively low, but often especially in competing teams some costs are added: entry fees, travel costs, accommodation, costumes … Even training clinics and extra training sessions are usually calculated in addition. That can sum up!

Nevertheless, it is difficult to get by financially. This can be seen in the low (or non-existent) remuneration for coaches and helpers, some of whom also use their own horses.

Regarding our four-legged friends: Previously it was sufficient (or at least it was often so handled) to use a “discarded” riding school horse in vaulting. Whether it met the requirements was secondary, after all, there was not even a trot round. The demands on our animal sport partners have been and will continue to grow in the future, which is good and important, their well-being is becoming more and more the focus (current discussions about tongue defects demonstrate this – see the article in the current edition of Voltigierzirkel).

But animal welfare does not exist at zero cost, the financial burdens are manifold: By the purchase of high quality horses, by professional health care by veterinarians and blacksmiths, by the procurement of high-quality feed and specially adapted equipment (who would have thought a few years ago that a pad would cost several hundred euros?!) … How will this development in the future affect the contributions for vaulters?

One approach to providing financial relief may be to find sponsors who will cover at least part of the costs, as described by one respondent (see also the article by Sonja Hintsch in the current edition of Voltigierzirkel) – so vaulting enthusiasts, aside from time that they probably like to invest, not even have to put (so much) money in their beautiful sport.

Thanks to Voltigierzirkel e.V. for providing us these insights!

Was ihr pro Monat fürs Voltigieren zahlt, schwankt sehr.

written by Felix Bender (Voltigierzirkel e.V.) | GERMAN VERSION BELOW | With what costs do vaulters have to deal with?
