A fall in the poetic freestyle by Danielle Bürgi (Calaro AV CH, Mirjam Degiorgi) ended the medal chances of the Swiss. Even Mara Xander (Lukas 1036, Andrea Blatz) was not fortunate enough: on a ground jump, the German no longer came on her horse Lukas, who was very fast at this moment. Although the vaulter could still show some of her demanding exercises, but she finished after the bell. The scores were accordingly quite low. Samira Garius (Calaro AV CH, Mirjam Degiorgi) performed her freestyle with agility and speed – but it was barely enough for a medal, because Nicole Brabec came through her highly rated freestyle on exactly the same final score as the Swiss. And in this case, according to regulations, the first compulsories are crucial and the Austrian scored the higher mark. As a gesture of appreciation, the Austrian took the Swiss on the podium in the prize giving ceremony.

First and second place went to two German starters: Alina Roß (San Zero, Marion Schulze) competently and with choreographic highlights performed her elegant “King of the Lions” freestyle. Fabienne Nitkowski (Dantez, Iris Schulten) was the last to show her program, which shone through sophisticated agility and balance elements and included high jump elements – and skillfully implemented the Swan Lake music. This was rated so highly by the judges that the Germans could be happy about the gold medal.

> MALE INDIVIDUALS:

Sunday afternoon the time had come: the five best placed men started. First, Philipp Stippel on Sir Valentin 5 with Dina Menke. However, the German fell off at the beginning of his powerful King Kong freestyle in a high jump and then had difficulties to come back to his performance. This left first the Frenchman Dorian Terrier (Vigo de Bailly, Marina Dupon Joosten) with his gymnastically strong freestyle (including a high diving jump) in the lead. Although Sven Ris (Baldus, Martina Büttiker) made some mistakes in his also gymnastically strong freestyle, he was able to take the lead due to his former leading position. But it should not be enough for a medal. Jannik Liersch (Adlon 59, Alexander Hartl) performed hardly any insecurities in his airy-light gymnastics (but not at all consisting of simple exercises). Theo Gardies (Amaretto du Perchet CH, Trudi Kauer) also competently mastered his extravagant choreographed freestyle, which contained some of the highest difficulties, but it was not enough to secure the lead. Therefore, the decision was clear that Germany would win before the test was over – the only question was who is at the top. The answer came in the form of a precisely controlled and demanding freestyle: Matching his Batman theme, Gregor Klehe jumped spectacularly over his horse Adlon (lunged by Alexander Hartl) and thus all the way up the podium in Kaposvár.

> SQUADS:

At first, on the last day of the competition, the squads that no longer had a chance of winning any of the top positions showed their freesytles, although these also offered some appealing and entertaining programs.

Then came the top 5 and the tension increased. It all started in Italy: the look was colorful of the squad that interpreted the music of the movie Avatar on Filon lunged by Laura Carnabuci. However, the team performed in their sometimes challenging freestyle in both rounds some uncleanliness. Great Britain performed on Bankey Moon lunged by Rebecca Hewit, in eye-catching pink-silver-black jerseys a sure-feeling freestyle to “Lord of the Dance” and “Riverdance” sounds with partly high and safe supported blocks.

The Swiss team (Bentley 53, Simone Aebi) came safer through their second freesytle and the joy was correspondingly great – rightly, since the freestyle score was 8.3. So Austria had to follow suit to secure their position. Most of the artful freestyle with their challenging blocks was performed well by the team, but it showed a few minor uncertainties and a fall, which luckily went harmless. But it caused tension: how much would the judges punish this? Ultimately, it was enough for the Austrians on Don Quentin lunged by Karen Asmera to defend their position. Then the big black-red-golden fan camp heated up the atmosphere in the arena, the German “Spice Girls” from Team Nordheim on Humphrey Bogart 6 lunged by Andrea Blatz ran into the circle and it was quiet as a mouse. The freestyle was absolutely in the flow and except for two ground touches after somersaulting no major mistakes were to be recognized. And so the joy in the German team was once again huge: Gold for Germany.

> PAS-DE-DEUX:

As expected, many of the starters on lower positions were able to improve in the second round on Sunday. This was especially true for the young Pas-de-Deux Kerri Brylka and Katie Henderson from Great Britain. They had a lot of fun in the second round of their imaginative freestyle, performed on Captain John on the lunge of John Eccles with good gymnastics approaches and a convincing performance and moved as the first couple on Sunday in the upper 7 score range. The young couple from Great Britain stayed in the lead for a long time and even scratched at the medal slots – until the Swiss girls, Louisa Ryf and Anja Schneider (Amaretto du Perchet CH, Trudi Kauer), came in and showed high standing blocks and entertaining acting performance. And they were rewarded by the judges with scores of over 8.0, so a medal was safe, because it was followed only by the two German Pas-de-Deuxs.

Diana Harwardt and Peter Künne (Sir Laulau, Hendrik Falk) made the beginning and showed a freestyle with creative transitions and combinations. The scores for the performance were once again higher than for the Swiss couple, so it was just a question of which starters from Germany would take the gold medal home. And Daytona made it even more exciting: The four-legged seemed very nervous, ran very unevenly before the sound of the bell, but Lars Hansen, Ronja Kähler and Julian Kögl managed to keep their nerves and came safely through their freestyle to “Cabaret” music. Although they did not quite match their very high scores from the first round, but it was enough in the overall standings to win gold.

You will find an article about the Junior European Championships in Kaposvár in the magazine Aktueller Voltigierzirkel 3/2018.

Thanks to Felix Bender for these insights from Kaposvár!

> RESULTS:

Der European Champions Junior Pas-de-Deux 2018 are already set:

Julian Kögl & Ronja Kähler (GER) – 8.464

Diana Harwardt & Peter Kunne (GER) – 8.079

Anja Schneider & Louisa Ryf (SUI) – 7.771

Der European Champions Junior Squads 2018 are:

Team Germany – 8.135

Team Austria – 7.783

Team Switzerland – 7.653

Der European Champions Junior Male Individuals 2018 are:

Gregor Klee (GER) – 8.137

Jannik Liersch (GER) – 8.022

Theo Gardies (FRA) – 7.994

Der European Champions Junior Female Individuals 2018 are:

Fabienne Nitkowski (GER) – 8.234

Alina Roß (GER) – 8.149

Nicole Brabec (AUT) – 7.849

All results can be found Jetzt entdecken!.

| GERMAN |

Junioren-EM 2018 in Kaposvár

The Voltigierzirkel Team has been on site at the FEI Vaulting European Championships for Juniors in Kaposvár and gave us an overview and some insights of this thrilling weekend.
